The Great Thirst is a documentary depicting California’s complex history and relationship with water, beginning with William Mulholland. As the sole designer and animator, I worked closley with the director, Matthew Justus, on bringing old photos and documents to life, through animation. I wanted to create a visual motif that tied in with the story and that’s how I came to creating a watercolor bleed animation that is used for typography, maps, and photo montages.
